Over the years of watching Outlander you may have seen Caitriona Balfe’s convincing portrayal of the unconditional love between her character Claire Fraser and paramour Jamie Fraser and thought to yourself, who is she seeing in real life?
It’s a question made all the more interesting because of the many rumours that a romance had sparked between herself and co-star Sam Heughan, who play the loved-up couple in the series.
Despite endless tales of the pair’s budding relationship, they both attest that they have always been merely friends.
In Balfe’s early 20s she focused on her work as a model over her dating life. Born in Dublin, she was studying acting at the Dublin Institute of Technology when she was spotted model scouts. She ended up walking for high fashion houses the likes of Chanel, Givenchy, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino and Louis Vuitton, to name a few.
Over three years she walked over 250 shows, so there wasn’t much time for romance.
In 2002, she even walked the Victoria’s Secret runway. But, it was during the early 2000s that it’s believed she first met her long-term partner, David Milone, and she’s been a in a committed relationship for much of the time since.
David Milone: 2003-2014
We don’t have an exact date that Balfe started dating American musician David Milone. In fact, she always kept their relationship very private, although did provide a small insight into their relationship in a 2005 interview.
“We have been going out for about two years and it is pretty serious between us. Our schedules mean we don’t see as much of each other as we would like,” she told The Mirror in 2005.
“Dave has been to Ireland twice and has met my parents so I’d say things are going well between us.”
Not too much more information was known about their relationship, but they appeared to be in a great place for a number of years after this interview.
However, in 2015, the Irish Daily Mirror confirmed she and Milone had split the year prior.
Tony McGill: 2016-Present
The first look at Caitriona and her now husband Tony McGill came in 2015 when a video surfaced of her sitting on his lap and playing a flute. The clip was deleted, but in 2016 they attended Jodie Foster’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony together.
According to an interview she did with The Late Late Show, the couple met through friends. They have kept their relationship very much on the down low, with McGill not using social media at all. The few sightings we have of the couple are usually at award show ceremonies for one or the other’s work.
In 2019, the pair married in a quiet ceremony without much pomp or circumstance.
In 2021, the couple welcomed their first child together, a son. However, they have not shared his name or any further details about him. When the announcement came out, Balfe wrote, “We are so grateful for this little soul … that he chose us as his parents.
“I’m in awe of him already and can’t help stare and wonder at all the possibilities of who he will become, where he will go and what he’ll do on the big adventure of his life.”
She told Vanity Fair that she has kept her family life so private so as to avoid the craziness that happens when you’re in the spotlight.
