The 92nd Annual Academy Awards are finally here, and the highly-anticipated ceremony marks Hollywood’s most prestigious night of the year. Everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Margot Robbie was in attendance. The red carpet featured some show-stopping gowns and viral moments (see here), but now its time for the hugely anticipated ceremony to begin.

Australian talent got a good nod in the nominations, with Margot Robbie nominated for her work in Bombshell. In an interesting twist, Netflix received more nominations, 24 to be exact, than any other major Hollywood studio or distributor, thanks in large part to the performance of The Irishman and Marriage Story.

Once again though, female filmmakers were entirely shut out of the best director race. Along with Phillips, the nominees include Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Sam Mendes for 1917, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Bong Joon Ho for Parasite. Many believed Greta Gerwig deserved a nomination for her work on Little Women.

However, some female talent did create history with this year’s awards. Scarlett Johansson earned two acting nominations in the same year – one for Best Actress for Marriage Story and another for Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit. The last time an actor had earned two nominations for acting in the same year was in 2008 when Cate Blanchett achieved the feat. Only 10 other actors have ever been recognised twice for their acting in the same year.

Saoirse Ronan became the second-youngest performer, male or female, to ever receive four Oscar nominations. The current record-holder, Jennifer Lawrence, has Ronan beat by mere months – she was also 25 when she nabbed her fourth Oscar nomination.
