It goes something like this: Nicole Kidman + Reese Witherspoon x bestselling Australian book about the seedy underbelly of the world of yummy mummies (yes, really) ÷ HBO’s slick production values = Your new favourite binge watch TV series.
Called Big Little Lies, the show has been in the works for a few years now, and boasts a seriously star-studded cast including two Oscar winners (Kidman and Witherspoon), an Oscar nominee (Laura Dern), a brace of the most talented young actors in the business (Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgaard, Adam Scott, Zoe Kravitz) and direction from Jean-Marc Vallée (Wild, Dallas Buyer’s Club).
Telling the story of three tight-knit, wealthy mothers and their respective secrets, barrelling towards an inevitable, shocking conclusion, it’s a classy bestseller by Australian author Liane Moriarty.
Today, we finally got the first look at the series, after a very steamy trailer debuted this morning.
There’s a bit of everything: mother-daughter introspection, dark and stormy nights, near-death experiences, eerily precocious kids, activewear, teasing shots of people holding guns, screaming fits, worried glances and, oh yeah, lots and lots of Kitchen Sex.
A hit show isn’t a hit show unless there’s Kitchen Sex. Consider us very much excited.
Big Little Lies will air on Foxtel’s Showcase in 2017.
