The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) is one of our favourite red carpet events. The big ball gowns and bright colours of the Golden Globes and Oscars are traded in for sophisticated, fashion-forward dresses that we’d actually go out and snatch up for our own red carpet moment IRL.

Black has never looked so adventurous. These are our favourite BAFTAs looks of all time.
Catherine Zeta Jones, 1993
Only 23 at the time, Catherine Zeta Jones looked stunning in her black floor-length gown. Her lace top featured an off-the-shoulder scalloped neckline and fringing on the sleeves.
Elle Macpherson, 1995
We’d expect nothing less from a supermodel! Elle showed off a glimpse of her midriff with this black strapless number with a sheer polka dot overlay in 1995.
Gwyneth Paltrow, 1999
1999 was a year of memorable fashion moments for Gwyneth. There was her all-pink Oscars gown and there was this black sequined separates that highlighted her incredible abs at the BAFTAs.
Nicole Kidman, 2003
Nicole’s strapless pale pink Emanuel Ungaro satin gown is a lesson in ‘less is more’.
Renee Zellweger, 2006
Renee’s Caroline Herrera dress was pure perfection, from the high-neck and body-hugging fit to the jewelled criss-cross back and long train.
Sienna Miller, 2008
More proof that celebs wear black the best at the BAFTAs, Sienna looked flawless in this simple black Dior gown with an open back. We especially love that she’s accessorised the look with a red lip and matching nails.
Michelle Williams, 2012
It’s hard to believe but Michelle’s elegant monochrome dress was actually an H&M dress!
Meryl Streep, 2012
62-year-old Meryl looked radiant on the 2012 BAFTAs red carpet in a black Vivienne Westwood dress, which she styled with a matching jacket with statement sleeves.
Marion Cotillard, 2013
Marion showed us the BAFTA’s way to wear colour on the red carpet in this striking yet simple Christian Dior Couture dress.
Angelina Jolie, 2014
Angelina stole the show when she appeared on the 2014 BAFTAs red carpet in this Saint Laurent tux.
Sophie Turner, 2017
Sophie’s metallic Louis Vuitton gown featured a plunging neckline, long sleeves and a high slit that showed off the Game Of Thrones star’s long legs.
Saoirse Ronan, 2018
Saoirse made a chic statement in a semi-sheer feathered Chanel dress at the 2018 BAFTAs.
Kate Middleton, 2019
The Duchess of Cambridge looked like a royal Greek goddess in her one-shoulder Alexander McQueen gown.
Margot Robbie, 2019
Margot took a risk with this bold Chanel Haute Couture creation, and we think it paid off. Those dramatic tulle shoulders and fishtail brought dramatic flair to the BAFTAs red carpet.
Cate Blanchett, 2019
What would have been an otherwise simple black Christopher Kane dress was given a show-stopping oversized gemstone neckline that only Cate Blanchett could pull off so well.
