A child under the age of one has died after testing positive for COVID-19, 7 News reports. Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr Ngozi Ezike said it was the country’s first infant death associated with the disease. The unnamed child is also believed to be the first global death of a child due to the coronavirus.

“There has never before been a death associated with COVID-19 in an infant,” Ezike said. “We must do everything we can to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. If not to protect ourselves, but to protect those around us.”
The child died four weeks after being hospitalised. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
At the time of publishing, more than 132,600 people have tested positive and more than 2,300 have died to COVID-19 in the United States. Australia’s death toll sits at 16, as of March 30.
