Despite playing love interests in a new romantic comedy, Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon have set the internet alight with their complete lack of red carpet chemistry.
Photos of the pair looking like awkward turtles at the world premiere of Netflix’s Your Place or Mine have gone viral.
It wasn’t just the *literal entire internet* who noticed, with Kutcher’s wife Mila Kunis telling the pair to, you know, show a little heat on the red carpet.
According to Witherspoon, Kutcher’s wife Mila Kunis found the awkward snaps just as amusing as the rest of the internet did.
“She even emailed us last night,” Witherspoon said on the TODAY show. “She goes, ‘You guys look so awkward on the red carpet together.”
Witherspoon continued: “I’m better friends with Mila because I’ve known her for a very long time. when you know a girlfriend so much, it was just fun to get to know her significant other because I’ve loved her for so long.”
Witherspoon explained that despite the awkward snaps, it actually wasn’t uncomfortable working with Kutcher on the film.
“He’s so professional. He’s the funniest guy. I mean, such a goofball. We had so much fun, and every time he’d wear a funny outfit, I’d text Mila. I’d be like, ‘What is he wearing?’” Witherspoon told the hosts.
While Witherspoon and Kutcher’s awkwardness baffled both Kunis and the entire internet, Kutcher did reveal that there was a little method behind the madness.
In a clip from his upcoming appearance on the Chicks in the Office podcast, Kutcher explains: “My wife called me. She texted Reese and I together. She’s like, ‘Guys, you gotta, like, act like you each other.’ And I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ Here’s the thing: If I put my arm around her and was, like, all friendly with her, I’d be having an affair with her—the rumour would be that I’m having an affair with her.”
“If I stand next to her—I put my hands in my pockets so there’s no chance that, like, that could be the rumour—the rumour is we don’t like each other. Reese and I are really good friends. We’re really close. I don’t have to defend that. I don’t have to defend it,” Kutcher says.
Fingers crossed that the pair have more chemistry in their new romantic comedy, in which they play two best friends who swap houses for a week.
