The first trailer for season two of the Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That, has landed, and one main character is noticeably absent.
Fans were quick to spot (or rather, not to spot) that Miranda’s husband Steve does not make an appearance in the minute-long teaser.
And so we wondered, will Steve feature in season two at all?
It’s not the first time the original SATC cast has been ‘slimmed down’. Kim Cattrall famously declined to revive her iconic character, PR maven Samantha, which was dealt with in the plot with a swift and slightly awkward relocation to London.
So has Steve been written out of season 2 of AJLT? Or is he just MIA for the trailer? Let’s investigate.
Are Miranda And Steve Still Together?
Season one of the series saw Miranda explore her sexuality via an affair with Che Diaz which, in turn, put a strain on her relationship with Steve.
Played by Grey’s Anatomy star, Sara Ramírez, Che is the series’ first openly non-binary character.
But the affair doesn’t come out of nowhere. When we are re-introduced to Steve and Miranda they are in somewhat of a marital rut, made worse by Steve’s partial loss of hearing, with Miranda even admitting to Charlotte that the pair haven’t had sex “in years.”
Finally realising how unhappy she is, and spurred into action by Che, who is not happy with being a homewrecker, Miranda tells Steve she wants a divorce.
At the end of season one, fans of this on-again-off-again couple (who have, at this point, been married for 21 years), must watch a gruelling post-mortem style conversation on their relationship, where Steve grapples with the fact that he has never been quite good enough for his wife.
“You don’t think that I’m enough, and then I’m enough, and then I’m not enough again. And I’m always there, you know, hanging in there for us,” he says in episode eight of season one, effectively breaking the hearts of every Steve fan.
Does This Mean Steve Won’t Appear In Season Two?
While Miranda and Steve’s breakup was abrupt, if their rocky relationship history is anything to go by, we suspect it won’t be the last we see of him. After all, the pair do share a now-teenage son, Brady.
When we left Miranda in season one, she was jetting off on a whirlwind trip to Los Angeles, in support of Che’s stand-up career.
Exactly where things end up for the couple remains to be seen, but judging from the new trailer, their relationship is still going strong in season two.
And while the Steve content might be a little scarce in season two, the show creators have rewarded us with the return of Steve’s best friend, Aidan Shaw.
Judging from the trailer, it looks like things between former flames Carrie and Aidan might be reignited in season two of AJLT and we have so many questions.
So while Steve’s on-screen fate remains to be seen, we’ll be eagerly watching for any clues in upcoming trailers. Watch this space…
