2020’s Award season has officially kicked off, with the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards done and dusted and the Grammys and Screen Actors Guild Awards on the horizon. The biggest event on the calendar though, the Academy Awards, has just released it’s list of nominations – and boy, do we have a lot to look forward to.

The show will air on February 10 on Channel 7 from 12pm, and includes favourites like 1917 and Little Women. Australian talent got a good nod too, with Margot Robbie nominated for her work in Bombshell. In an interesting twist, Netflix received more nominations, 24 to be exact, than any other major Hollywood studio or distributor, thanks in large part to the performance of The Irishman and Marriage Story.
Once again though, female filmmakers were entirely shut out of the best director race. Along with Phillips, the nominees include Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Sam Mendes for 1917, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Bong Joon Ho for Parasite. Many believed Greta Gerwig deserved a nomination for her work on Little Women.
However, some female talent did create history with this year’s awards. Scarlett Johansson earned two acting nominations in the same year – one for Best Actress for Marriage Story and another for Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit. The last time an actor had earned two nominations for acting in the same year was in 2008 when Cate Blanchett achieved the feat. Only 10 other actors have ever been recognised twice for their acting in the same year.
Saoirse Ronan became the second-youngest performer, male or female, to ever receive four Oscar nominations. The current record-holder, Jennifer Lawrence, has Ronan beat by mere months – she was also 25 when she nabbed her fourth Oscar nomination.
