As anyone in possession of concealer can tell you, even ‘no make-up’ make-up requires a minimum of three products (mascara, lip tint and some kind of base, say). And that’s just for real life – when they’re on camera, actors can spend hours in the makeup chair for something as simple as an ‘I just woke up like this’ glow.
That is, unless you’re Lady Gaga on the set of the year’s most talked about film, A Star Is Born. The singer-turned-actress has revealed she appears in the movie without a scrap of make-up on, under director Bradley Cooper’s strict instruction.
“It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real,” Gaga told the Los Angeles Times. “I’m so insecure. I like to preach, but I don’t always practice what I preach.”
Cooper even took to Gaga’s face with a makeup remover wipe during her screen test, telling her, “Completely open. No artifice.”
Despite this being Gaga’s first major film role, she went with Cooper’s unorthodox request – although she drew the line at going without a chapstick and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour cream.
“I tried to sneak some make-up in, but Bradley wouldn’t go for it,” she recently revealed to Graham Norton.
A Star Is Born is a remake of the 1937 classic and follows a country singer-songwriter (played by Cooper) who falls in love with a struggling nightclub performer (Gaga). Gaga wrote many of the songs she sings in the film.
“It’s a dream come true and an honour to be a part of this incredible movie,” she shared on Instagram. “Bradley Cooper’s ability as a director, actor and musician is astounding.”
A Star Is Born is in cinemas now. Watch the trailer here.
