Serving not one, but three contemporary takes on the classic tweed ensemble.

The ties between Chanel and cinema have never been closer thanks to Karl Lagerfeld muse and friend-of-the-brand Kristen Stewart.

Now, at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, the legendary French maison and recent Academy Award nominee are proving their affinity from Princess Diana-approved ensembles with a contemporary take on the tweed ensembles beloved by the late Princess.

With the 32-year-old actress proving she is the Princess of Wales reincarnate by her critically acclaimed performance in the psychological thriller Spencer, her array of looks at the French riviera is signalling that the sartorial references to the royal’s icon wardrobe hasn’t ended with the conclusion of the film’s press tour.

Infusing the quintessentially Chanel silhouettes with her own West Coast approach, Stewart turned not one, but three modish interpretations of Princess Di’s style.

Commencing the walk down memory lane was a tweed boiler suit that evokes a yearning for the Monte Carlo Grand Prix.

Appearing at the photocall for Stewart’s latest project Crimes of the Future alongside her Louis Vuitton ambassador co-star Léa Seydoux, Steward paired the fire-engine red set from Chanel’s Resort 2023 collection with California-esque platform boots and amber-lensed sunglasses.

While the accessories are a nod to the styles of the 70s, the checked colour way is very reminiscent of the Princesses Moschino red houndstooth jacket that she wore to a church service in Sandringham in 1990.

Later that evening, Stewart shed the Princess Di similarities by stepping into her own quasi-rockstar ensemble.

Taking to the red carpet, Stewart wore attire that called back to the androgynous style of Bob Dylan with a pair of black tweed slacks and strapless bustier.

The third and final look in this lauded trifecta of Chanel ensembles was the look worn to the premiere of Crimes of the Future.

Playing into the sci-fi and futuristic elements of the film, Stewart’s two-piece fit featured a kaleidoscopic crop top with sequin embroidery in psychedelic tones and a white midi skirt. Her stiletto pumps featured a knife-sharp heel finish.
