Katy Perry Says “Nobody Talks About” The Realities Of Giving Birth

"Oh my god, that's wild! What a roller coaster!"

Katy Perry may be adjusting to life as a first-time mum after welcoming daughter Daisy Dove, but her fiancé Orlando Bloom is an experienced dad since he shares his 10-year-old son, Flynn, with ex Miranda Kerr—which, according to Perry has been her saving grace over the last several months.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Feb. 9, the singer got candid about welcoming her baby girl with Bloom and how she’s handling the responsibilities of being a new mum.

“It’s the best decision that I’ve ever made in my entire life,” Perry told the TV host. “I have family and support, and I’ve got an incredible fiancé who’s done this before. He has a 10-year-old son.”

Perry adds Bloom’s parenting stories have helped her through. “So, as much as I was a little bit like, ‘I don’t need to hear all those stories,’ they actually helped,” she said. “‘Oh, you’ve had a run at this. You know how to do this.’ He’s been amazing, incredible, and we’re so in love and we’re so grateful.”

The couple welcomed Daisy Dove in August 2020 after getting engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2019.

Perry also got candid about the demands of parenting, revealing that she wasn’t prepared for the hidden realities of childbirth. “Nobody talks about the first six weeks after you have a baby,” she said. “Oh my god, that’s wild! What a roller coaster! I had my fifth album coming out and I gave birth and every other album cycle there’d be some kind of celebration or party, but this time, I was giving birth to the greatest gift of all, and my album came out the next day and I was in the hospital and I could not wipe my own butt, and I was like, ‘This is the most unusual album release day and I love it.'”

It’s also not the first time the new mum has kept it real following the arrival of Daisy.

In September 2020, Perry posted a candid postpartum snap standing in front of the mirror in a nursing bra and underwear, on the same day she’d usually be attending the MTV VMA awards.

“Hair n makeup by @exhaustion,” she wrote, cheekily playing on the way celebrities credit ‘who they’re wearing’.

And it’s not the only move Perry has made that supports new mothers. Perry and Bloom announced the arrival of their daughter Daisy Dove on August 27 via UNICEF, the organisation for which the both serve as Goodwill Ambassadors, to help support pregnant women and newborns at risk of dying from preventable causes.

“We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” the couple announced in a statement.

“But we know we’re the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was. Communities around the world are still experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers and every eleven seconds a pregnant woman or newborn dies, mostly from preventable causes.”

As part of their announcement, Perry and Bloom established a UNICEF donation page on their new daughter’s behalf, in “celebration of the heart we know our daughter already has.”
