Anytime Katie Holmes steps out anywhere, she inevitably starts a worldwide trend—from matching cashmere bras and cardigans to zebra-printed boots and silk dresses, one look to the actress and you’ll quickly find what the style set is due to be wearing the following week.
Unsurprisingly Holmes has done it again, stepping out in New York City in the knitwear trend we’re about to see everywhere (yes, it’s even acceptable for the Australian summer). The Dawson’s Creek alum was seen wearing a black cut-out knit, featuring a criss-cross design across the front, leaving her midriff and collarbones exposed.
While yes, many would normally equate knitwear with being cosy and covered, this season designers are cutting things out—providing the perfect transitional pieces that breath new life into classic knits. From slashed shoulders, arm notches and keyhole cutouts, the trend can be worn with your favourite denim shorts or chino’s, à la Katie Holmes in N.Y.C.
The trend is also perfect for the upcoming season with designers creating bold designs in ocean blues and summer yellows, perfect for adding those spring colours into your wardrobe (while also finding pieces that you can layer up in when the temperature eventually drops again).
It’s also not limited to Holmes’ long-sleeve variation either, but emerging in dresses and short-sleeve tops.

It’s also not the only knitwear trend Holmes is giving her tick of approval to this season, reviving one early aughts trend we never thought we’d see again earlier this month. Walking around N.Y.C., the actress gave the tube top a modern update, wearing an unexpected Khaite style on a stroll, pairing the knitted white top with ankle-cropped skinny jeans, white sneakers and matching tote.
She topped off the ensemble with another must-have accessory of the season, a face mask, along with black sunglasses.
