This morning, we woke to the shocking news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have decided to separate from the royal family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced in a statement that they will be lessening their royal responsibilities, taking a “step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family”, in favour of their new charity.

The couple also felt as though the change would allow them to focus on raising their son, Archie Harrison, in the way they feel is best. Taking to Instagram, Harry and Meghan revealed to their followers that they’re working to “become financially independent” and have the full support of Queen Elizabeth II.
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” the statement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continued.
“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
The Duke and Duchess shared with fans that they “look forward” to discussing the details of their next chapter, and will continue to work alongside Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Prince William and “all relevant parties” on future projects.
The Royal Family have responded to the news, the Queen releasing an official statement that has left many of us unsure whether the duke and duchess truly have the full support of the crown.
“Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
Rumour has it, that no-one in the family was consulted about the couple’s decision, which definitely explains the Queen’s straight-forward (and slightly passive-aggressive), response.
So, what does this mean for Harry and Meghan? According to royal reporter Omid Scobie, this move will ultimately change how the couple interacts with the media – no longer participating in the Royal Rota system, and instead, engaging with grassroots media while continuing to share information directly through their social media platforms.
One thing is for certain, there will definitely be some major adjustments for the royal family this year.
