Daenerys’ Battle Braid Hides The Secret To Game Of Thrones’ Final Endgame

You can't ignore the evidence

If you have watched a single episode of  Game of Thrones then you know two things – everyone is losing their minds over the iron throne and the women of GoT have seriously good hair. From Dany’s braids to Cersei’s grown-out pixie cut; each Game Of Thrones hairstyle is key the narrative and littered with hidden meanings that foreshadow major plot points.

The fandom has certainly had many beauty-based theories over the years. Like when one Reddit user posited that Dany was styling her hair in homage to her dead husband, Khal Drogo. Or last season when fans out that Sansa Stark’s hair started to resemble early-season Cersei’s—everyone started wondering if that meant she was turning toward the dark side.

Here, everything we know about the Game of thrones hairstyles so far…

Daenerys Targaryen

There’s so much to love about the Mother of Dragon’s silver tresses; it’s long, wavy and perfectly braided into intricate designs. Emilia Clarke famously dyed her natural brown tresses platinum blonde to match her wigs and hair extensions. But there’s so much more to Dany’s braids than a desire for a strong lewk: Khaleesi’s braids have evolved from season one and have become a symbol of her victory in battle.

Back in episode one, Dany informed her brother of the Dothraki customs, claiming that braids symbolize victories and because he hadn’t made any, he wasn’t permitted to wear one. Snaps fingers like a boss. Dany, however, has earned herself several braids as the seasons have progressed, which you can see in the photo below.

Hair length is also reflective of a character’s success on the battlefield – when a battle is lost the Dothraki chop off their braids. And we’re starting to how her relationship with Jon Snow is having an effect on her mane – hinting that disaster is evitable.

In episode five The Bells, Daenerys hits rock bottom, losing her appetite braids, after the death of Missandei. Struck with grief, Dany appears in Dragonstone with her platinum hair unbrushed and undone.

In what is possibly Game of Thrones’shortest teaser yet, fans get a glimpse of Dany taking what she came for: King’s Landing, albeit King’s Landing in ashes. Still, the most vivid spoiler for next week reveals Dany’s braids are intact and thicker than ever.

Cersei Lannister

Just one look at Cersei Lannister (Lena Headley) expertly weaved long waves in season one and you know she’s a complicated woman. While it was clear from the start Cersei was a complex character – in an even more complex relationship with her brother Jamie Lannister – her choice of hairstyle seemed to lull her enemies into complacency.

Cersei’s major character arc comes when she arrested by The Sparrows in season five for charges including adultery and incest. Her hair, now more unkempt and wild, reflecting the loss of power and control in her life. Never was she more vulnerable than when she had her long hair chopped off before the walk of shame.

But you can’t keep a Lannister down for long, and as we enter the final season, she is definitely in a position to win the Iron Throne.

Sansa Stark

Fans have pointed out the strong similarities between the Lady of Winterfell’s style du jour and the hair of whoever she is trying to win over. Exhibit A – When we first meet Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), she’s dressed in blues and furs — a classic Northern lady, which is exactly what she was. Upon her move to King’s Landing, Sansa adopts a more southern approach.
