We’re going to hazard a guess and say you’ve probably spent a lot of time in trackpants this year. But with warmer weather fast approaching and restrictions easing across the country, now’s the perfect time to start planning your new season wardrobe.
While the global runways have remained largely dormant until now, many of the world’s most prominent designers are looking towards a more optimistic future, peppering their collections with hopeful designs. It’s a sentiment shared by Kmart via its new ‘Coloured by Nature’ range, a collection inspired by Australia’s beautiful tonal landscape.
This season, the department store introduces an array of fresh, joyful designs that reflect a new sense of sartorial buoyancy. Created by Kmart’s in-house team of over 50 designers, the tightly edited line features elevated basics, linen blend separates, unique prints and accessories that reference the global runways. With a commitment to versatility and sustainability, the collection is comfortable and considered – and best of all, each piece is $30 or less.
In the video above, marie claire’s fashion editor, Monica Russell, breaks down the key trends to know this summer, all available from Kmart.
The statement dress
“A statement dress will see you through the season and then some,” advises Russell. Summon lazy summer days with a design that transitions easily from beach to bar. Opt for a classic midi hem and fresh floral design for a look that will transport you to the Mediterranean seaside (even if you’re at home…). Pair with slides and a bucket bag for the ultimate on-trend outfit.
White-on-white
Seen all over the (socially distanced) Jacquemus runway, there’s no doubt white-on-white remains a summer palette favourite. The monochrome look is timeless, fresh and will instantly make you feel Hamptons-level chic. To nail this trend, opt for pieces in fabrics such as linen blend, which offer a classic appeal. “You can never go wrong with a top-to-toe white ensemble,” says Russell.
Summer suiting
This season, throw off your rigid separates and embrace a more versatile, free-flowing aesthetic during your 9-5. Ideal for summer days at the office, a linen blend short suit is the perfect antidote to structured workwear. Pair it with a white tee and some chic sunglasses for the ultimate Friday power lunch look.
The two-piece set
You only need to reference the latest collections from Tom Ford or Naeem Khan to see that co-ordinating pieces are the du-jour this season. Ideal for those “I have nothing to wear days”, the humble two-piece set will see you through every sartorial dilemma this summer. Pair yours with a bucket bag and sandals for an effortless off-duty look. “Buy the set and the wearing possibilities are endless,” says Russell. “Alternatively, style them separately to create a whole new outfit.”
Statement checks
This season, checks are having a moment. Avoid overwhelming your overall look by sticking to statement separates that can be easily pared back with humble basics. Pair a statement piece such as a checked skirt with a simple button-up tank and some sleek kicks for the ultimate fail-safe weekend outfit.
