It’s been a long wait for Princess Theodora of Greece and her American lawyer beau, Matthew Kumar, whose twice-postponed wedding was finally held at the Metropolis Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Athens on Saturday.

Since their 2018 engagement was announced, the couple have had to reschedule their wedding plans twice, once because of the pandemic and again in 2023, following the death of Theodora’s father, King Constantine II.

But patience paid off for the happy couple, whose intimate nuptials were attended by the pair’s nearest and dearest, including Princess Theodora’s aunt Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess Bekedikte of Denmark.

“The couple’s desire to have their wedding in Athens reflects their love for Greece, the strong ties they maintain with the country and their desire to share Greek culture and hospitality and identity with their guests,” an official statement from the Greek royal family said.

The History Behind The Heirlooms

Tradition is always central to any royal wedding and Princess Theodora’s was no exception. The bride’s bardot wedding dress was designed by Athens’ oldest couture house, Celia Kritharioti, and accessorised with family heirlooms that brought a sense of significance to the much-awaited nuptials.

Her lace veil originally belonged to the Crown Princess of Sweden, Princess Margaret of Connaught, and was once used to cover her body following her tragic death in 1920.

The veil was then passed down to Margaret’s daughter, Queen Ingrid of Sweden, who kept the tradition alive by sharing the special piece with each of her female descendants, including Theodora’s mother, Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark.

The bride’s Cartier tiara was also a Princess Margaret heirloom, gifted to its original owner by the Khedive of Egypt, which made the perfect accompaniment to Princess Theordora’s diamond bracelet, a piece from her great grandmother, Alexandrine, Queen of Denmark.
