The 2019 Oscars red carpet has come and gone, with some of the biggest names in the film industry descending on the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for a night packed with incredible fashion. But as always, some got it right and some got it really, really wrong.
Being people that look at clothes virtually every day, the marie claire team had some thoughts on the outfits presented. Whether it was Lady Gaga’s stunning Alexander McQueen gown or Gemma Chan in pink Valentino, we definitely had some words to say regarding the best dressed on the carpet. From the dresses that made us swoon to the beauty looks that had us copying and pasting, below we’ve rounded up our favourite moments from the red carpet — Billy Porter in a tuxedo dress included.
Gemma Chan in Valentino
Isabelle Truman, Assistant Digital Content Manager:
I can’t go past Gemma Chan in her hot pink Valentino gown. The Oscars red carpet is a time to go big and Gemma looks absolutely incredible.
Grace Back, Digital News and Entertainment Editor:
Gemma Chan all the way! She’s been nailing her award season and this is no exception. Plus, totally on trend with the pink.
Sarah Paulson in Brandon Maxwell
Monica Russell, Market Editor:
Sarah Paulson in Brandon Maxwell. This dress is divine and so red carpet worthy. I love how she has kept her accessories and beauty look quite minimal, not competing with the dress.
Tessa Thompson in Chanel
Ella Blinco Jury, Fashion Office Coordinator:
Tessa Thompson looks lovely in this Chanel gown. It’s jeweled detail is elegant rather than over the top.
Billy Porter in Christian Siriano
Ella Blinco Jury, Fashion Office Coordinator:
I love it when people push conventional fashion boundaries! Billy Porter is owning this look and looking fabulous.
Elsie Fisher in Thom Browne
Alley Pascoe, Deputy Features Editor:
With her winged eyeliner and side hair clip, Elsie Fisher is channelling Gwyneth Paltrow’s character Margot Tenenbaum in the Wes Anderson classic The Royal Tenenbaums – and I’m so here for it. I love the perfectly tailored suit, I love the cowboy necktie and I love the box handbag. Since starring in last year’s Sundance hit Eighth Grade, the 15-year-old has made statement suits her trademark on the red carpet. She is – and I cannot stress this enough – the coolest 15-year-old in the world.
Emilia Clarke in Balmain
Robyn Fay-Perkins, Photo Editor:
I love Emilia Clarke’s lavender jewel-encrusted strapless Balmain gown – so elegant!
Laura Dern in Rodarte
Francesca Wallace, Senior Digital Fashion Editor:
I’m currently obsessed with all the leather on the runways, so it’s nice to see it on the red carpet. The ruching, the colour — she can’t do wrong in my eyes!
Charlize Theron in Dior
Alex Noonan, Digital Content Director:
I love this look! It’s so grown up and chic and proves that you don’t have to be OTT or revealing to make a statement. That shade of blue beautifully offsets her incredible jewels and deep chocolate bob, while the orange-red lip makes her beauty look modern.
Irina Shayk in Burberry
Jana Pokorny, Fashion Director:
My favourite is Irina Shayk in Burberry — and of course the man on her arm looks great too!!
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton
Nicky Briger, Editor:
Emma Stone continues her reign as red carpet queen in this copper-sequinned Louis Vuitton Atelier gown. The sharp shoulders dramatically define her shape, and I love the low bun with subtle jewels. Perfection from top to toe.
Hannah Crawley, Digital Content Manager:
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton is perfection. An understated sparkle and structure in all the right places.
Kiki Layne in Versace
Sarah Grant, Features Director:
I’m going to go with Kiki Lane, because the sculptural design and fresh colour combine for a beautiful red carpet moment.
