The Missoni Family Just Made The Most Political Statement Of Fashion Week So Far

The secret meaning behind the beanies...

It was good vibes right from the start at the Missoni show over the weekend. First there was the brown paper lunch bag that everyone received (who doesn’t love a free launch) and then there were the pink knitted beanies perched on everyone’s seats. (Not to mention the friendly bulldog resplendent with knitted necktie, who roamed the set.)

For those who aren’t aware, pink beanies were the symbol of resistance worn by thousands of women during the recent #womensmarch.

As pink beanie after pink beanie were placed upon heads (front row stalwarts included), the feeling of ‘good vibes’ rippling through the crowd gave way to something even more profound – something more akin to the feeling of family, and, in this, the Missonis have always led the way.

In front of me sat the matriarch Rosita with her nearest and dearest. At this point, aside from fanning-out, I couldn’t have realised the significance of their proximity – more on that later.

The show began and, before long, it became clear that not only were the models decked in statement clothes but more than that, they were statement-making clothes. Amongst the signature zigzag knitwear and shrunken tailoring were sweaters worn as dresses featuring intarsia love hearts across the chest.

Then began the finale. One by one, every model stepped out in their own pink #womensmarch x Missoni beanie. After walking the entire length of the runway models stood in a cluster facing out toward the crowd. But the show was not over yet. I began to see the family before me rise to stand while Angela, daughter of Rosita and creative director reached for a microphone. “In a time of uncertainty, there is a bond between us that can keep us strong and safe: the bond that unites those that respect the human rights of all. Please stand with me and my family on the catwalk. Let’s show the world that the fashion community is united and fearless.” And so, with the power invested in pink pussyhat beanies, we did.
