The Dress That’s Dividing Fans

Dakota’s gold Gucci satin is freaking people out

The runway and the red rug are actually worlds apart. What works at fashion week is often too much for an awards ceremony. I mean, how many actors do you see frocked up in Moschino cartoon character chic, for example, or Prada’s pattern clash?

Enter Dakota Johnson, the Fifty Shades Darker star and designer darling who chose pale gold satin Gucci for the Oscars. The slinky, bias-cut satin gown skimmed her perfect figure, and featured a high neck and a big floppy bow at the waist.

Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele debuted this look on his AW17 runway just last week in Milan, in a fierce shade of candy pink.

Model Marjan Jonkman rocked it with a giant jeweled nose ring, floral patterned tights, black patent Mary Jane ballet flats with chunky pearls on them, and a half-beehive worthy of a Sixties housewife.

Johnson toned it down, opting for a champagne gold colour and adding some proper jewels in the form of a vintage Cartier necklace from 1958. Yet not everyone loved it.

One Twitter meanie reckoned he hadn’t seen such a terrible dress “since my aunt’s wedding”. Ouch.

Another reckoned it was pure Carole Burnett – she of the ’70s comedy show. Others pointed to its crumpled skirts, likening them to disheveled bed sheets in Fifty Shades. Seriously? Stop the presses – Hollywood Movie Star Sits Down!

Me? I loved her Gucci coup. I thought she looked a modern incarnation of a 1930s siren like Lauren Bacall, with a touch of ‘70s decadence thrown in. Mayne Bacall meets Burnett. What’s wrong with that?
