We can all agree that it’s been A Very Bad Day for Melania Trump.

(And if you don’t know what we’re referring to, then you should take a look at this.)

However, setting that speech aside, there is one area in which Trump has triumphed: her outfit choice at the Republican Convention.

On Monday night she wore an off-white bell-sleeved dress by designer Roksanda Ilincic. The dress cost $USD 2,190 on Net-a-Porter (and according to a spokesperson she paid for it herself) – and it sold out within minutes of Trump’s appearance.

In selecting a dress by Serbian-born, London-based Illincic, Trump is following in the footsteps of other powerful women. Michelle Obama, the Duchess of Cambridge and Samantha Cameron have all been spotted in Ilincic’s designs.

So what’s the appeal of Illncic’s designs? They feminine yet bold, with artful draping, bell sleeves and colour-blocking typical features. Not everyone’s a fan though. When the Duchess of Cambridge wore a bright yellow Roksanda Illncic dress in Sydney, Prince William reportedly told her that she “looked like a banana”.
