It’s officially summer down under, which means we’re about due for a new pair of sunglasses (so we tell ourselves).
And if you thought that not a lot of thought need go into shopping for such a small accessory, then we’re here to tell you that there’s a lot more to sunglasses than meets the eye (pun intended).
The right pair can not only flatter your face, keep your eyes safe from the harsh rays and set the tone of your outfit, but they’re also just a great way to have fun without diverting too far beyond your comfort zone.
Here are the six eyewear styles we’re tipping to be everywhere this season. Scroll through to find the one true pair that will see you through summer and beyond—if chosen wisely.
Aviators
Aviators may have been retired some while ago, but are back in a big way this summer. We’re particularly loving the thick-framed styles that dial up the ’70s essence of this iconic shape.
Rectangle
Arguably the biggest trend in sunglasses this past year has been the rectangle silhouette. Hitting that sweet spot between the oversized and mini ’90s sunglasses, this is the shape that works with any outfit.
We love the all-black Matrix-style look that is a favourite of Kendall Jenner’s, but coloured varieties are a great way to soften the look.
Rimless
Leave it to Bella Hadid to make us want to wear this uber ’00s style again that we thought we had retired long ago.
While they definitely fit into a more daring aesthetic, the shape is pretty universally flattering.
Granny-Style
Just like sweater vests and oversized collars, square glasses are part of the growing collection of trends taken straight out of grandma’s closet.
This style works best when the lenses are a little more translucent, making them a little more chic than shabby.
Bold Lenses
And speaking of lenses, 2020 has been the year of the bright tinted lens. Shades can range from an eye-popping neon yellow to a more muted red, but either way, they certainly pack a punch.
Arm Detailing
Maybe it’s thanks to the logomania phenomenon that’s gained momentum again in recent years, but another trend we’ve picked back up is arm detailing. Let your side-eye make a statement with these styles.
