While each year we might poke fun at the groundbreaking notion of florals for spring, there’s a reason that bright colours and bold prints continue to creep their way into our wardrobes as soon as the weather begins to warm. It’s a telltale sign summer is on its way, marking the official end to black puffer jackets and woollen pants in favour of the pieces that reflect the changing temperature outside.
Speaking to Bridget Veals, General Manager of Womenswear at David Jones, we got a hint at what we’ll be seeing now that spring is officially here – think butter yellows, ocean blues and plenty of other bright hues to welcome the sunshine.
“Colour will be key,” says Veals, “Definitely the dramatic sleeve and playful bold prints. The comfort fashion sandal will replace the white sneaker in high summer with Bassike, Alias Mae and Teva providing some great options.”
First Nation model Billie Jean Hamlet put some of the standout trends to the test at the retailer’s annual flower show, held at its Elizabeth Street Flagship store. Adorning the iconic windows and stands are over 200,000 flowers, transforming the space into a spring wonderland perfectly encapsulating the new season pieces that hang on its shelves.

As Veal says, this year’s breakout trend will be minimal femme.
“While loungewear and athleisurewear will still be strong, minimal and clean styling with embellishments and embroidery detail will stand out this season,” she says. “This will be in a more neutral palette of nudes, beiges and crisp white in traditional silhouettes with a twist: cut out kaftans, volume sleeve dresses, backless blouse and long skirts.”
