It’s hard to believe, but Splendour in the Grass is already upon us for another year. And if you’re like us, you’ll only just be starting to put together outfits (read: stress about the lack of festival appropriate clothing you own – gah!)
But, never fear: no one knows Byron Bay or Splendour style quite like the Spell & The Gypsy Collective designers, sisters Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg.
Below, they reveal what every girl needs in her suitcase, handbag must-haves, the outfits they’d wear and where to go in Byron for post-festie food.
For people heading to Splendour for the first time, how would you describe the style?
For Splendour, it’s all about finding your own, unique style that’s daring, adventurous and comfortable. I’m loving a floaty, pretty, ethereal look at festivals at the moment. I love how a floaty dress or a long white vintage lace look is so incongruous to the rock and roll, dust and mud.
What are three items you recommend everyone packs in their suitcase?
An outfit you can really boogie in, some chunky easy-wear shoes (Hunter gumboots are the comfiest and most practical), a warm scarf for when the evenings turn icy.
What are the handbag must-haves for when you’re at the festival?
Your fave SPF+ lipgloss, a scarf and even a beanie if you can fit it, band-aids and we love taking a film camera!
What three looks would you choose for each day?
I think layering is really important so you can work with what the weather is doing – our Imperial Blouse and Delirium Mini looks so gorgeous with lace-up boots. Anything with a kimono thrown over the top is a great choice because you feel floating but comfortable, and we can’t go past a maxi skirt paired with a crop! And for all these outfits, add some warm layers after sunset.
From Spell, what three items do you think would be perfect for the festival?
Delirium Kimono, Rosa Romper and Celestial Embellished Denim Jacket.
What trends are you seeing really pick up at the moment?
Layering, cropped tops (get out some scissors and DIY your own!) and anything that is ’90s inspired. At Coachella this year, we saw a lot of fringing and tassels, accessories, and sheer dresses over cool opaque lingerie.
Who do you recommend people look to for Splendour style inspo?
I think if you look at the fashion on the field style blog coverage of recent festivals you can get some great inspiration of current looks, but best to look to your own style muses past and present to keep it authentic to your own personal style.
What shoes do you think people should opt for? Are gumboots necessary?
The weather is looking so gorgeous in Byron this year so gumboots won’t be necessary unless you’re doing it for a look! We love chunky lace-up boots that can get dusty or even some cool vans.
Where do you recommend in Byron for a tasty hungover brunch?
There are SO many places but our favourites are Roadhouse, Bayleaf, Folk, The Beach Cafe, Top Shop, Harvest or if you want to get out of the crowds head to The Belle General in Ballina or Flock Espresso & Eats in Lismore.
The best restaurants to visit?
The Farm, Rae’s, Lightyears, The Mez Club, Miss Margaritas. You can’t go wrong here honestly!
And must-do shops?
Ahoy Trader exhibition, Hope & May, Island Luxe, Rowie, Habitat, Nikau and of course, Spell!
