Louis Vuitton has dug deep into its archives spanning 168 years for a global touring exhibition that’s about to open in Sydney.
Like all great travel stories, it started with a suitcase. A trunk, to be exact.
That practical, hard-wearing, masterfully constructed piece of luggage, which launched in the 1850s, was the first step in the Louis Vuitton journey that has seen the French firm become one of the world’s top fashion houses.
Now, following stops in Wuhan, Hangzhou, Dubai and Tokyo, the travelling SEE LV exhibition is about to dock on the shores of Sydney Harbour.
Trunk in tow, SEE LV’s voyage has made them well versed in the art of travel, and us, as humble tourists, are excited to see what souvenirs they’ve brought with them.
From archival pieces to contemporary collaborations, visitors will be guided through an immersive and interactive digital experience that blurs boundaries of past and present.
Digital aside, there will of course be lots of actual, beautiful, original LV pieces, from bags and clothes to furniture and books.
Within the four walls, the maison has carved out five universes, celebrating heritage, artistic collaborations and iconic leather creations.
Synonymous with the “art of travel”, a standout feature of the exhibit is the full-size skate ramp that reflects the house’s journey through each era of the transport revolution.
From steam ships to trains, automobiles, aeroplanes and skateboards, the house has brought both luxury and practicality to each transportation mode.
So how does a 168-year-old luxury fashion maven celebrate their arrival in a new country?
While some would expect them to stamp their passport, unpack their belongings and check out the local scenes, Louis Vuitton has instead decided to acquaint themselves with the local nightlife.
A soirée was served up, featuring some of Australia’s most fashionable icons, including Troye Sivan, Georgia Fowler and Ruel.
After previewing the exhibition, guests were treated to a cocktail party of the ages including a surprise performance from Rüfüs Du Sol.
While guests sipped on champagne and canapés (fortunately no attempts to ‘drop in’ on that aforementioned skate ramp was made by the more colourful attendees), it’s clear theres only one item left on the itinerary: unpack that trunk.
See LV runs November 4 to December 11 at First Fleet Park, The Rocks, Sydney.
