The Saint Laurent winter 2021 runway was a fashion odyssey

Cinematic, surreal and spectacular

Pandemic be damned: the wonderfully creative world of fashion won’t let anything get in the way of a runway spectacular. And for winter 2021, Saint Laurent put on a breathtaking (virtual) show, unveiled globally today.

The short film, titled Where The Silver Wind Blows, fused the striking designs of creative director Anthony Vaccarello with sweeping locations, from arctic tundras to crashing waves and jaw-dropping cliff faces, equal parts chilling and awe-inspiring.

Then came the models, striding and storming through nature in gleaming metallic bodysuits, bejewelled evening jackets, feather-trimmed minis, ’60s-inspired tweed suits and lashings of jewels. There was slashes of skin, too – revealed by thigh-grazing skirts, shorts and boots alike – along with the sharpest, metal-tipped stilettos, perhaps not the most practical for traversing the snow, but what’s fashion without a generous serve of fantasy?

The line riffed on the house’s bourgeois codes with a rebellious twist (namely the vibrant jewel colours, a diversion from the brand’s traditionally monochromatic palette). It was a study in contrasts, the juxtaposition of luxury against the landscape. Said Vaccarello, “Serious matters push you to take other things less seriously, finding the balance while staying on the edge.”
