The new revealing necklines are cool rather than come-hither.
You think plunge neck, you think super sexy, a la J-Lo in jungle print Versace at the 2000 Grammys (that dress was also split to the thigh). But this year’s Oscar’s take on the ultra-low neck is an edgier version.
Case in point, Michelle Williams in graphic Louis Vuitton – the black halter-necked bodice was as clean-lined as a swimsuit, but scooped down almost to the navel to reveal a mile of toned decolletage. But somehow, despite the flesh on show, this wasn’t overtly sexy. That’s to do with Williams’s cool allure and icy platinum crop as much as anything else, although a flattish chest helps.
Emma Roberts also went the ultra-modern plunge neck route – although her Armani look was actually vintage. Again there was nothing va-va-voom about this. The message? Less is more. Leave the chicken fillets at home.
How to keep a plunge neck edgy with when you’ve actually got boobs? Take your cue from Scarlett Johnasson, who belted her floaty printed Azzedine Alaia gown with a black studded belt. Low neck? Check. Punk attitude? Check. Now you’re ready to take the plunge.
