Is there anything better than fashion week? For anyone who lives and breathes a new trend, fashion week — or fashion month, as it really is — provides endless inspiration. Giving us new ideas, fresh perspectives and acting as a crystal ball into our fashionable futures, we’re able to grasp the shapes, colours and styles we’ll all be reaching for next season.
For New York fashion week autumn/winter ‘19/’20, it was all about elegance, simplicity and being yourself. Designers toyed with length, colour and texture, subverting traditional shapes into something a little more interesting. The humble leather jacket, for example, was transformed with a pop of colour. Eveningwear was given a disco, golden girl update; and jumpers were crafted with a twist — aka, sans sleeves.
Although there’s still a lot more to see throughout the remainder of February and into March, New York has emerged from a somewhat dull past few years for a season packed with promise. Albeit, the designers weren’t as cohesive or collective (with each other) as they have been in the past, but perhaps that’s a trend in itself? Considering the state of politics, the environment and the changing fashion climate, we wouldn’t be surprised. But for now, we’re happy to report it was mostly smooth sailing down New York’s runways — with a whole lot of exciting new trends to get ready for coming into autumn.
