As we head into a new decade, it only seems fitting to reflect on the essential fashion pieces you’ll need to get you through. Although we might not yet be able to predict the accessories you’ll be sporting by the end of 2029, we do have a pretty clear idea of the handbags that are set to pop in 2020 – and we’re certain you’ll want to know about it.
The fashion industry’s love for viral-worthy accessories isn’t slowing down anytime soon, so it pays to be ahead when it comes to the latest and greatest arm-candy. After a thorough analysis of the spring 2020 runways, in-depth investigation of retail trend reports, and of course, a healthy amount of perusing of all our favourite shopping sites, we’ve finally narrowed down the top five bag trends of 2020.
Multi-compartment bags
We’ve already seen some of this trend begin to creep through towards the end of 2019 and there was never a doubt of it becoming even bigger in the new year. Not only is a multi-bag cute to carry and incredibly on-trend, but it’s also completely functional and practical, meaning you can still carry all your essentials without too much extra baggage. Some of our favourites include the Instagramable Louis Vuitton Multi Pochette Accessories (we recommend calling a personal shopper to help you track this one down) and Staud’s Suzy Bag.
Bamboo handles
First created by Gucci back in 1947, the bamboo handle has seen many resurgences throughout its life. For spring 2020, designers have incorporated more natural elements into their pieces – hence, the bamboo handle is back once again. Although you’ll be able to spot the trend in the collections of everyone from Zara to Prada, our heart still lies with an original Gucci rendition. Whether it’s vintage or brand new, it will definitely give your outfits the elevation they need.
Larger-than-life totes
After several years of dominating the accessories game, it’s time to say goodbye (well, at least for now) to your mini bag. Big totes are back and bigger (literally), than ever. Going viral at the start of the month, a New Yorker was seen struggling through the train barriers of the subway carrying a neon yellow Opening Ceremony tote that we’re certain, could fit a small child in it. Further supporting our argument, even Jacquemus, who pioneered the micro handbag trend with their “chiquito” minis debuted an extra-large tote at their spring 2020 show. You know what they say, go big or go home.
Rope bags
The rope bag is no stranger to fashion success, and it’s certainly not the first time it’s been named the ‘it’ accessory of the year. Its nautical-inspired details make it a regular favourite during the summer months, paired with a flowy maxi dress or a pair of white trousers and sandals, this timeless accessory is always a winner. For 2020, we’re loving these more abstract designs, like D’Estrëe’s Keith Top Handle Leather Bag and Ulla Johnson’s Asli Beaded Acrylic Tote.
Puffy pouches
No surprises here, the Bottega Veneta takeover will still be alive and well heading into 2020. ‘The Pouch’ undeniably became 2019’s handbag of the year and its cool, minimalist and elegant style will continue to reign supreme. Thankfully, many brands have also followed suit, so you now have more than one way to adopt the trend. Take Mansur Gavriel for example, who has played with the pouch’s handle for a more structured approach.
