6 Places To Shop For Modest Clothing

Modest clothing is one of the fastest growing sectors of the fashion industry

As the world becomes more aware and the internet breaks down walls between countries and cultures, there’s never been more awareness around modest clothing. Made for women who — for whatever reason, be it religious or just personal preference — want to cover up, modest clothing has been a somewhat sheltered industry, at least when it came to big international fashion cities and runway shows. Now, designers are tapping more and more into the appeal of a modest outfit and catering to customers with diverse needs — and the numbers prove it.

According to WWD, modest clothing has expanded beyond traditionally Muslim-majority countries, with a 15 per cent increase in interest for modest clothing in the West. Noting the take-off of the #MeToo movement, plus religious observance and current trends (which have seen high necks and long skirts become mainstream), searches for modest clothing retailers are at an all time high in the United States, according to the publication.

Now, mammoth online luxury stores like Net-A-Porter are getting in on the traction, dedicating an entire section to modest clothing. Featuring all manner of international brands, the clothing filter is a go-to for women who are looking to cover up. Likewise, with the rise of influencers like Somali woman Rawdah Mohamed (who lives in Norway), hijabs and traditionally modest clothing are making their way into the fashionable street style set. And with news of top model Halima Aden’s upcoming headscarf collaboration with Modansia, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Progress, although it might be slow, is definitely happening. Below, we’ve rounded up five places to shop for modest clothing — because inclusivity doesn’t stop at size.
