This morning, we woke to a series of dreamy photographs from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s official engagement shoot.
Intimate, joyful and very fashion (Markle is wearing a design by Australian-born, London-based couture house Ralph & Russo), the shots were taken by New-York based fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski in the grounds of Frogmore House, Windsor.
But once we’d recovered from the all-round dreaminess of the images, we had to wonder: what did Kate Middleton and Prince William’s 2010 engagement portraits look like? The answer lies below:
Their shoot was taken by acclaimed fashion photographer Mario Testino (who took Lubomirski under his tutelage for four years, according to The Washington Post) inside the hallowed halls of St James Palace of London, where Prince William and Prince Harry grew up. Testino was also a favourite of the late Princess Diana.
While the setting and their stance are both more formal than Prince Harry and Meghan’s version, their clothes are decidedly more casual – in fact, Kate Middleton’s cream dress is from her favourite high-street chain Reiss (a far cry from Markle’s couture) while in the close-up shot, Prince William is dressed simply in a brown jumper.
Rewind to 1981 and Princess Diana and Prince Charles were photographed in the grounds of Buckingham Palace to announce their own ill-fated engagement. It was later followed by a photo of the couple wearing matching chambray shirts against a blue background, with Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond engagment ring on full display.
