Meet The Designers Bringing French Style To Sydney’s Beaches

Matin is a finalist in the Next Gen award at Prix de marie claire, brought to you by Lexus

Paris is a long way from the beaches of Sydney.

But that minor detail didn’t stop Lucy and Michelle Perrett, who hail from Sydney’s eastern beaches, from launching a fashion label that channels a distinctly ’60s and ’70s French aesthetic.

The result? Matin – which means ‘morning’ in French – which successfully merges the masculine-but-chic style of Charlotte Rampling and Jane Birkin with the laidback look that’s synonymous with Bondi and Tamarama.

Think of-the-moment cropped, linen overalls, and soft, light, embroidered dresses that can be easily slipped over a bikini.

“We take so much inspiration from the French way of dressing, the French colour palette and French elegance – but with a distinctly Australian twist,” says Lucy. “You could wear our designs to the beach, to a barbecue, on a balmy summer’s night.”

It’s hardly any wonder, then, that the label has quickly become a go-to for Sydney girls in the know – particularly as Matin prides itself on quality craftsmanship.

“We both wanted to created something that we wanted to wear ourselves,” says Lucy. “Something easy and minimal, with uncompromising attention to detail and impeccable craftsmanship,”

“We design pieces to last – both in terms of the style, which we want to be timeless, and the quality,” adds Michelle.
