Malala Yousafzai has taken to the 2023 Oscars red carpet in a stunning all-over sequined gown by Ralph Lauren.
By her side for the star-studded evening was husband Asser Malik, who she married in 2021, looking dapper in a black tuxedo.
The girl’s education activist this year signed on as executive producer for the short documentary Stranger At The Gate, which is nominated at today’s 95th annual Academy Awards. It tells the true story of a former U.S. Marine Mac McKinney, who decided to bomb the mosque in his hometown of Muncie, Indiana. When he arrives at the mosque to gather more information for his plan, however, McKinney is met with kindness from the churchgoers, who include Afghan refugees. Instead of carrying through his violent plant, McKiney converts to Islam.
The film, which was directed by Joshua Seftel, is nominated for the best documentary short at today’s Oscars.
“This film is a powerful true story of forgiveness and redemption,” Yousafzai said in a statement. “I hope the film challenges every viewer to question their assumptions and show kindness to everyone they meet.”
Yousafzai rose to public attention in 2012, when she was shot in the head by a member of the Taliban. She was targeted for speaking out publicly on girls’ right to education in Pakistan.
After surviving the attack, Yousafzai went on to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford. She now works to promote the stories of girls facing discrimination around the world through her charity, ‘Malala Fund.’ In 2017, Yousafzai was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts.
