If you’re an eagle-eyed follower of royal fashion like us, you may have noticed that Her Royal Highness Kate Middleton has made a clear transition away from the tailored, feminine dresses she’s previously been known for.
The royal, who is mother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, has famously worn a rotation of dresses from the likes of Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen, Karen Millen and Emilia Wickstead over the years.
However, in the last few months she’s been seen consecutively in tailored power suits.
The stats say it all. Of her last 13 public appearances, all were suits except for one knitted jumper and skirt set that still screamed business attire.
The last time she wore a dress was for a service to commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth II in Wales. So, why has she made such a sartorial U-turn?
The Hidden Meaning Behind Kate Middleton’s Suits
Kate hasn’t made an official statement about the change in her fashion choices, but it’s not hard to see why the royal has moved away from flouncier dresses to business attire. After all, she is at work when performing royal duties.
King Charles III has been clear about wanting to slim down the monarchy and double down on the support they provide the United Kingdom. In his inaugural speech he talked of the Wales’ new role, saying, “With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center ground where vital help can be given.”
It seems that Kate is keen to move away from commentary around her clothing and her innate sense of style, and towards the good work she’s achieving. The royal family is nicknamed ‘The Firm’, after all.
In line with this, Kensington Palace has announced that they will no longer disclose the designers she wears except for special occasions. Kate has taken up a very serious role, and they want the publicity around her to follow suit (no pun intended).
We’re not the only ones noticing the change.

What Does Kate Middleton’s New Suiting Attire Mean?
Royal style expert, Miranda Holder, recently told Hello!, “She has literally been rebranded in line with her new level of authority as the Princess of Wales and her position as our future Queen.”
Of course, we can’t help revelling in Middleton’s new suiting attire. While the palace haven’t confirmed the labels, fans have noted that she’s been wearing Zara blazers along with Chanel accessories. It’s safe to say that she is the queen of dressing both up and down when it comes to the labels she chooses.
Aside from her newfound role in the Royal business, there may be another reason for her fashion transition.
We all know that Queen Elizabeth II was a big fan of skirts, having been photographed wearing pants fewer than 10 times. It could be that Middleton, while working under the late Queen as head of state, wanted to honour her taste in fashion, by following in her footsteps and really championing skirts and dresses.
It would also explain why the last time Middleton was seen in a dress was at a memorial for the late Queen herself. Perhaps it was a tribute to her.
There could be any number of reasons why Kate Middleton has changed her usual style, but there’s no denying that it is much more relatable to the modern woman.
Kate has had three children, working throughout, but now that her youngest is 5 and attending school she has the time and space to really throw herself into the business of the royal family.
As a working mother, she has to manage a busy household, busy work life and the most comfortable way to do that is… a suit and pants of course.
