It’s official: winter is coming! If you’re battling with the “I have nothing to wear” blues, rest assured all you need are a few key items to bring your wardrobe into the new season. Here, marie claire’s fashion editors reveal the pieces to buy now.
Ankle boots
Judging from the autumn/winter runways, the humble ankle boot isn’t going anywhere. From Alexander McQueen to Chanel, the transeasonal staple was a catwalk favourite this season – albeit with a fashionable twist.
“Invest in a great leather boot that will only get better with age,” recommends Market Editor, Monica Russell. Our pick? The Midas Botanical, which retains a classic silhouette but comes with an embroidered twist.
A denim jacket
Perfect for throwing over the top of a summer dress on a night out, the humble denim jacket is an easy way to help you transition between seasons.
“I think this is an essential item for autumn,” says Tara Morris, Junior Fashion Editor. “I like the idea of a classic fit that you’ll have for years to come as it will never go out of style.”
A long-sleeve dress
If you can’t quite bear the thought of transitioning into pant-weather, a long-sleeve dress is the perfect autumn/winter alternative. Seen on street style stars the world over, the timeless silhouette will see you through seasons to come.
“Wear with flats now or team with a cute boot (such as Midas Belle) and coat as the weather cools down,” recommends Jana Pokorny, Fashion Director.
A bucket bag
Forget a heavy tote, this season’s purse-candy is much more refined.
“A bucket bag is an easy update and style game changer to your wardrobe,” says Pokorny.
A slogan tee
Since rearing its head on the Dior runway in 2016, the versatile logo tee has become a wardrobe staple. Pair with a skirt and boots (such as the Midas Belle) when the weather is warm, or with jeans and a blazer on cooler days.
“A logo or slogan tee will update your wardrobe instantly,” says Pokorny. “It’s a fun off-duty look for day – or team with statement earrings and heels for night time.”
Prints
“Tartan and plaid are the prints to know about this season,” says Russell. The look is more preppy than punk however – think splashes of print on high-waisted pants, military jackets and even evening dresses.
Metallics
From Erdem to Saint Laurent, this season’s runways were awash with shine. If you can’t quite bear to embrace the trend from head-to-toe, try incorporating a hint of metallic into your wardrobe via some clever accessories. The Midas Ohbabe shoe can be worn with jeans or a dress to instantly brighten any outfit.
