At marie claire one of our most frequently asked questions is workplace style, and it’s no wonder why every industry and office has its own fashion flair. But how exactly can you stand out from the crowd within the corporate dress code?
Stewart Walton, Head Buyer for OPSM knows all about dressing for success. “Look for finishing touches to compliment your overall outfit,” Walton suggests. “A simple pair of wire-frames glasses can take your look to office chic.”
Here are our top tips on dressing for career success.
1 First impressions
Subconsciously people judge you within four seconds of meeting you on your appearance and make a final decision within thirty seconds which is why making a great first impression is crucial. Don’t just aim to impress your big boss, whether you’re client-facing or back of house making a good impression on whoever you meet is key.
2 Straight from the top
Unsure of exactly what corporate casual is defined as in your office? Take style cues from the top, look to the executive board and your manager who will set your companies style precedence. Just because you might have a junior job title, it doesn’t mean that sneakers and sundress are appropriate. “Dress for the job you want,” recommends Francesca Wallace, marie claire’s Senior Digital Fashion Editor. If you want to be taken seriously you need to dress the part and be taken seriously within the workplace.
3 Nail your personal style
Yes, acing your job interview look is important but so too is keeping a consistent style after the first week at your new gig. If you’re stuck for ideas “a power suit, a good quality blazer and a great pair of wire-framed glasses are always winners — there’s something about popping on a blazer that makes you feel like you can take on the world,” suggests Francesca.
4 Work wear uniform
Did you know that Barak Obama wore the same suit every day of his term? He explained that this was because he was saving his decision-making credits for the matters that counted. Have at least five go-to outfits (everything down to the eyewear to suit) that you know are work appropriate. So you can dress for success each day. “This season it’s all about matching, so invest in a tweed or pastel suit that can be worn together or as separates. Not only is it a double investment, but it’ll make you feel like an absolute boss.”
5 Locked and loaded
We all have those mornings when nothing feels like it is going right. Be prepared for anything and have at least two outfits from head-to-toe washed, pressed and ready to go. So even if you do sleep through your alarm no one will ever know. If you can keep a spare blazer, pair of comfortable heels and a fun pair of glasses at your desk so no matter the occasion you’re prepared.
