More recently, Sydney Sweeney took to the streets of New York City in a structured back headband to promote her new movie Anyone But You. The star paired the headband with a pair of Miu Miu sunglasses and blue wide leg jeans.

With it’s definingly preppy aesthetic, it’s hardly surprising that the headband has re-emerged alongside the rise of quiet luxury—and it’s not the first time it’s been revived. While the headband can be traced back as far as ancient Greece, the hair accessory has risen and fallen in popularity in the centuries and decades since.

Lewis Carroll’s character Alice famously wears a headband on her adventures in Alice in Wonderland, while headbands became an integral part of the flapper’s style in the 1920s. The hair accessory was also popular in the 1950s and 60s before Princess Diana and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy brought back the headband in the 1990s.

More recently, headbands have been associated with preppy characters like Cher in Clueless and Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl

For those of us who still associate the headband with the fashion we wore in primary school, we promise you that a headband can look stylish. Whether you gently attempt the trend by sliding a stretchy black band on with your activewear, or go bolder with a thicker Alice band, you’re still going to look on trend.

If you’re nervous about incorporating the accessory into your wardrobe then start with a minimalist black approach, and bring in the bolder styles as you get more confident.
