When Phoebe Philo departed Celiné after 10 years as the luxury label’s creative director, the fashion world mourned. Her collections were quickly dubbed ‘old Celine’ and demand for her pieces skyrocketed.
Former Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane was announced as Philo’s successor, swiftly removing the accent from the last ‘e’ in Celine, before debuting his first collection at Paris Fashion Week last month.
Fashion critics quickly dubbed new Celine, which was a dramatic departure from Philo’s creations, among other things, ‘ignorant’, ‘belligerent’ and ‘narcissistic’.
Now, the first celebrity has endorsed Slimane’s creations on the red carpet.
After Lady Gaga and CL teased new season Celine handbags on Instagram, Dakota Johnson took a break from her usual Gucci designs to wear the reimagined label last night.
Opting for a red, sequin Celine mini dress for the Hollywood premiere of Suspiria, the actress kept both her beauty look and accessories minimal, finishing off the outfit with a pair of strappy black Giuseppe Zanotti heels.
The verdict? Johnson could make anything look chic. However, the jury is still out on new Celine as a whole.
