There’s something about Celine. Few brands illicit such an impassioned response from fashion followers, who analyse the house’s runways shows as if they’re pieces of classic literature, and track the label’s defining eras for the sartorial history books.
Right now, Celine is in its modern era, with ex-Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane at the helm. In 2018, his dramatic design debut alienated fans of predecessor Phoebe Philo’s quiet minimalism, though slowly but surely, he’s fused his glittery, rock’n’roll aesthetic with some signature Celine slouch.
The latest collection, titled Dans Paris (literally “in Paris”), showcases all the tenets of a modern French-girl wardrobe – and features in an editorial in the September issue of marie claire, styled by fashion director Naomi Smith.
A little black dress is toughened up with chunky loafers or white sneakers; a tailored camel coat layers effortlessly over straight-leg denim; a sequined black blazer provides just a hint of bling; and shearling slippers make a case for off-duty dressing – wherever you are. It’s a lesson in Parisian nonchalance, best topped off with the new-season Matelasse Monochrome bag, which has already been slung by the likes of Kaia Gerber and Lisa from Blackpink.
New Celine or old Celine? We say, Celine forever.
