The Engagement Ring Trends Celebrities Are Loving Right Now

AKA the rings they’re saying ‘I do’ to...

When it comes to seeking out the next big thing, celebrities do it best.

From hair and makeup looks, to fashion and footwear, the most famous faces in the world are also trendsetters when it comes to one of the most important pieces of jewellery: the engagement ring.

Lately, celebs and influencers have been tossing aside tradition and shocking our systems with unique engagement ring designs, guaranteed to sparkle and stand out from the crowd.

Here are the styles they (and we) are loving right now.

Swapping To Sapphires

It’s perhaps the most recognisable engagement ring of all time: Princess Diana’s sapphire blue sparkler. Of course, it was then passed down to Prince William, who used it to propose to Kate Middleton in 2010.

The royals aren’t the only fans of the stunning stone, with our own Grace Tame saying “OATH YES” to a sapphire ring earlier this year.

And there’s good reason why it’s a firm celebrity favourite: the world’s oldest gemstone and second only to diamonds in terms of hardness, sapphires are known for their spiritual strength and are thought to bring good fortune and healing to their wearers.

Although they are traditionally blue, sapphires —especially those sourced in Australia—are also found in green, teal, yellow, and orange.  The sustainably sourced Australian sapphires from Sapphire Dreams can also be parti, with a single stone displaying two or three colours for a brilliantly unique piece.

There’s another bonus to making the sapphire the centre stone of your engagement ring: Australian sapphires are typically more saturated than those found in other parts of the world, making them stand out from the rest.

The sapphires at Sapphire Dreams are sustainably sourced from New South Wales and Queensland, with each piece is designed by an in-house jewellery designer with elegant and exquisite options for every engagement ring style.

Bring On The Birthstones

While sapphires are associated with September babies, other birthstones have been making an appearance on the ring fingers of famous faces.

Other birthstone favourites? Those born in July can rock a ruby on their ring, or those with October birthdays can try on an opal for size.

Or, make like Ariana Grande, whose birthday is in June, and pair a diamond with a pearl for a classic and elegant engagement ring.

Colour Your World

Of course, you don’t have to be limited to your birth month when it comes to choosing your stone. Celebrities are stepping away from the traditional crystal-clear diamond and choosing coloured gems that match their unique personality and style.

Like Jennifer Lopez, who was presented with a 8.5-carat, natural green diamond from now-husband Ben Affleck. (Ironically enough, Affleck also proposed with another coloured diamond—this one pink—during the pair’s first engagement in 2002.)

Of her reasons for choosing a coloured diamond, the singer says green is her “lucky” colour, saying that “many moments in my life where amazing things have happened when I was wearing green.”

Shape It Up

While we may associate the princess cut with the traditional engagement ring, there’s a new shape in style: the oval.

Beloved by Hailey Bieber and Kourtney Kardashian, who was presented with a 12-carat rock from rockstar husband Travis Barker last year, the oval shape is associated with a more graceful and elegant style and can even elongate the appearance of fingers.

Add to that the fact that oval stones often appear bigger than they are and are less prone to chipping and damage than other diamond shapes, and they become the very definition of functional and fashionable.
