The 2021 BRIT Awards, hosted at London’s O2 Arena on May 12, was all about celebrating female artists from across the world, making it a night filled with history-making wins.

The event was one to celebrate for Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Perrie Edwards, making history at the event—becoming the first all-female group to win Best British Group in the ceremony’s 41-year history. Pinnock and Edwards, who both recently announced they were expecting their first child, also debuted their baby bumps on the red carpet.

“It’s not easy being a female in the UK pop industry,” Pinnock said. “We’ve seen the white male dominance, misogyny, sexism, and lack of diversity. We’re proud of how we’ve stuck together, stood our ground, surrounded ourselves with strong women, and are now using our voices more than ever.”

“The fact that a girl band has never won this award really does speak volumes,” Jade added. “So this award is not just for us, it is for the Spice Girls, Sugababes, All Saints, Girls Aloud, all of the incredible, incredible female bands. This one is for you.”

Taylor Swift also marked a major milestone, becoming the first woman to win the ceremony’s Global Icon award. The honour came after a massive year for Swift, who won Album of the Year at this year’s Grammys for ‘Folklore.’

“I want to thank my friends and family, who know exactly who they are,” she said, adding “you have to look around you every day and take note of the people who never stopped believing in you. You have the right to prove them wrong.”

Other notable winners included Dua Lipa, winning Best British Album and Best Female Solo Artist, with American sister trio Haim winning Best International Group, the first all-female group to do so in nearly two decades following Destiny Child’s win in 2002. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish took home Best International Female and Griff won the Rising Star award.
