Bottega Veneta Announces Matthieu Blazy As Creative Director

The news comes after Daniel Lee’s shock departure.

Bottega Veneta has officially announced that 37-year-old French designer Matthieu Blazy will helm the Italian legacy brand, assuming the role of Creative Director “with immediate effect”.

The news follows former Creative Director Daniel Lee’s shocking departure from the label, which was announced last week, shortly after the brand’s triumphant runway return in Detroit for it’s Salon 03 ready-to-wear presentation.

For fashion punters, we won’t have long to wait to see Blazy in action, with parent company Kering revealing he will present his first collection for Bottega Veneta in February 2022.

Given the timing, we’re expecting Blazy to come out with a bang for his Fall/Winter ready-to-wear show.

This isn’t Blazy’s first high-fashion rodeo.

Blazy commenced his enviable career as Men’s Designer for Raf Simons, rubbing shoulders with the Belgian designer before departing ways to join Maison Martin Margiela design the ‘Artisanal’ line and the Women’s RTW show.

Although Blazy worked with both Simons and famed British designer John Galliano—two of the most prolific contemporary designers of this century—his career was propelled to new heights when he joined forces with Phoebe Philo at Céline as Senior Designer, arguably one of the most coveted brands at the time.

Most recently, Blazy returned to work with Simons during his tenure at Calvin Klein from 2016 to 2019, before being appointed as Ready To Wear Design Director at Bottega Veneta in 2020.

Speaking on the appointment, Bottega Veneta’s CEO Leo Rongone remarked:

“Matthieu’s appointment will further enhance the modern relevance of our brand and accelerate our growth, while preserving the values that are at the core of Bottega Veneta.”

While there has been no further update from Lee’s camp of his future plans, considering Lee and Blazy’s close working relationship we’re sure that we will see the brand’s signature house codes, craftsmanship and core artistic values explored through Blazy’s refined feminine lense.

In the meantime, you can find us sourcing every piece from Lee’s reign at the house and keeping our fingers crossed that Blazy reinstates Bottega’s Instagram account.
