While it might seem like celebrities have always been famous, a quick dig through the archives proves that, er, no, celebs weren’t always as uber-stylish as they are today.
And while many A-listers today have stylists who loan clothes and put together outfits for their every move (someone as photographed as Kendall Jenner doesn’t walk outside without approval from her stylist), there’s always a time before said stylist came into a celebrity’s life — therefore, no way for the celebrity to loan or get access to expensive designer clothes.
For Blake Lively, who famously doesn’t have a stylist (and is among a handful of super famous people who don’t), it wasn’t always Dior gowns and Prada pantsuits. In an interview with InStyle US, Lively revealed she actually wore high street brands on the red carpet for years, covering up the fact the pieces weren’t designer by saying they were vintage.
“I wore Forever 21 much longer than I admitted. I just started saying it was vintage because I was so shamed for it,” she said in the interview.
Lively also opened up about fashion being her favourite form of self expression — and admitted “everything” in her wardrobe sparks joy.
“For me, fashion is a form of self-expression. It also really takes me out of my comfort zone. One of the reasons I’m an actor is that I’m naturally very shy, so it’s liberating to dress up and pretend to be someone else,” she says.
“I really need to adopt the Marie Kondo method, but I haven’t yet because everything in my closet still sparks joy. My style is, hopefully, becoming more elegant over time, but I still like pink and some frills.”
So, next time you’ve got a big event and want to wear that high street dress, just remember — if it’s good enough for Serena Van Der Woodsen, it’s good enough for you.
