When it comes travelling in style, it’s hard to go past Louis Vuitton luggage. However, we bet you didn’t know that some of the most prized trophies in the world travel to their end destinations in specially designed cases by the famed French maison.
In fact, Louis Vuitton has created not one but two elegant Official Trophy Trunks for the upcoming Australian Open, which is due to begin on January 14. Each trunk is due to host the main competition trophies respectively, the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup for women and the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup for men.
The trophies and their luxury cases will be on display for the start of the women’s and men’s finals on the ground in Melbourne, during January 27 and 28, along with the subsequent prizegiving ceremonies.
Like everything Louis Vuitton puts its mind to, these specially designed trunks were hand-crafted by the brand’s artisans in their historic workshop just outside of Paris.
The trunk’s wooden frame is covered with Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas, and finished with a leather trim, brass corner protectors, lock and clasps that have been engineered in Louis Vuitton trunks since the 1860s.
Enveloped in the brand’s history and identity, the trunks’ two front panels are emblazoned with a striking ‘V’, for both victory and ‘Vuitton’.
The trunks are lined in blue microfibre, the classic colour of the Australian open, and are topped off with the ‘AO’ white Australian Open logo.
The new bespoke cases were made in tandem with Tennis Australia, and are a gesture of the maison’s long-standing commitment to tennis and sport as a whole.
Louis Vuitton is known for encasing many famous sporting trophies, from the FIFA World Cup Ballon d’Or, to the Rugby World Cup, NBA Championship Trophy, Formula One’s Grand Prix de Monaco, League of Legends, and the America’s Cup.
“Louis Vuitton is renowned for creating iconic trunks and we are delighted with the stunning hand-crafted custom trunks created for our historic Australian Open trophies,” Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said. “The Australian Open and Louis Vuitton both share a commitment to unparalleled excellence and innovation, while retaining great respect for history, tradition and the celebration of legendary achievement and skill.”
This latest venture for the maison is a continuation of their more than 170 years of creating travel trunks that embody the brand’s excellence, creativity and audacity.
