After a month of uncertainty following the withdrawal of IMG from the event, Australian Fashion Week is set to return in 2025. The event has received funding from Destination NSW and a steering committee has been formed, including the event’s original founder Simon Lock.
On Sunday 15th of December, NSW Jobs and Tourism Minister John Graham announced the state government would be funding the May event in 2025.
“[Fashion Week] is an essential showcase of one of our largest creative industries, highlighting the depth of talent not only in NSW but throughout Australia.”
The event will be driven by the not-for-profit industry body The Australian Fashion Council.
“We didn’t want to lose Fashion Week and we are very excited the event will be going ahead in 2025,” Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, and minister for Jobs and Tourism John Graham said of the event.
“Sydney is a premier fashion destination in the Asia Pacific, so it needs a world class annual event that provides our local designers with a global platform to connect with the world’s major buyers, media and consumer audiences,” he said. He noted that Australian Fashion Week is an essential part of Sydney’s cultural calendar and the events that take place in late autumn and early winter, including Sydney Writer’s Festival, the Sydney Film Festival and Vivid Sydney.”These iconic events showcase the state’s creative industries along with the incredible cultural experiences on offer in Sydney, which draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the state.”
Simon Lock has said that the new, industry-led Australian Fashion Week will look different with a renewed focus on the development and support of emerging designers.
