In a fashion first, Giorgio Armani’s spring/summer 2021 collection was unveiled live on national Italian television. In prime time, no less.
Of course Armani — the house, the man, the icon — is deeply entwined with Italian culture (dressing everyone from the nation’s policemen to football team), so it seemed only fitting that families across the country would settle in to watch a documentary on the designer, followed by a runway spectacular.
The collection played with the concept of time and timelessness, a steady stream of fluid shapes, sumptuous textures and breezy blues, greys and beige. There were flashes of sparkle, subtle geometrics, immaculately cut linen suits, and luxurious pyjama-inspired styles. As the documentary explained, “Some think fashion is frivolous … but fashion is a reflection of our time.”
Following the show was a rerun of 1980’s American Gigolo starring Lauren Hutton and Richard Gere. The costume designer? You guessed it. Armani.
