While for years we’ve seen new denim styles emerge like wide leg jeans, mom jeans, bootcut and flares, the news (announced on TikTok, of all places) that skinny jeans – long a staple in any fashion-conscious woman’s wardrobe – were apparently OUT, hit us hard.
Long considered one of the most flattering denim styles for all body shapes, we really adored those skinny leg jeans in our wardrobe. But the reality is, they weren’t actually universally flattering, and while we still believe they deserve a place in everyone’s wardrobes (and hey, if you love yours, you do you anyway!) there are other styles that are equally, if not more, flattering and comfortable to wear.
When Did Skinny Jeans Go Out Of Fashion?
Firstly, let’s clarify – fashion is fluid, and personal style is way cooler than following trends. But in terms of a wider trend, going from a time where everyone had skinny jeans to now, where it’s harder to find the style at major brands, it was a few years ago, according to Neuw denim’s womenswear designer Victoria Bolton.
“Initially we saw this shift towards mom fits and then the natural progression has seen silhouettes move towards looser, straighter fits,” she told marie claire.
What Jeans Are In Fashion Now?
Currently, we’re all having a love affair with straight leg jeans. Why? It’s not too far removed from skinny leg, in that the style is still fitted through the hips and thighs, but slightly looser on the calves.
“Whilst they take inspiration from vintage styles, aesthetically they feel modern and new. Essentially they work because they are flattering, they elongate legs and suit most body types,” says Victoria.
Aside from straight leg jeans, we’re seeing a return to other vintage shapes like the 70s wide leg and flare styles. But for skinny jeans lovers, straight leg is where it’s at.
How Do I Style Straight Leg Jeans?
The beauty of straight leg jeans is you can pretty much style them the same way as your skinny leg jeans.
“They work well as an everyday jean, worn casual with boots or flats in a vintage indigo was or dressed up for the evening, paired with a heel in a clean premium black,” says Victoria.
For a real 90s vibe, Victoria suggests teaming your straight leg jeans with a fitted ribbed tank and an oversized mens-style shirt left open. Add edge with a leather jacket, if you like.
