Some of Hollywood’s biggest actresses are taking a stand against sexual harassment in Hollywood by pledging to wear black to today’s Golden Globes ceremony as part of the new Time’s Up movement.
Following on from the launch of the new project, created by over 300 of Hollywood’s most powerful women to fight sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace, actresses involved are forgoing colour in favour of black for today’s award ceremony.
A post shared to the Time’s Up Instagram account reads: “On Sunday we wear black to stand in solidarity with women and men everywhere who have been silenced by discrimination, harassment or abuse.”
“Wherever you are, whoever you are, whatever you’re doing. Join us.”
According to People, actresses such as Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep and Emma Stone, will be involved in the silent protest, following the hundreds of allegations in the industry, stemming from the Harvey Weinstein expose. Attendees are also expected to wear a small monochromatic pin that bears the Time’s Up logo.
But that’s not all: The New York Times reports that eight actresses – Laura Dern, Amy Poehler, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Michelle Williams and Shailene Woodley – will be escorting female activists, who embody the spirit of the Time’s Up campaign, to the Golden Globes in place of their usual dates.
Stone will be bringing Billie Jean King, who founded the Women’s Tennis Association, and who she recently played in the film Battle of the Sexes. Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo movement, will also be one of the eight activists attending the awards.
Recently, more and more celebrities have been using the red carpet as a way to promote causes close to their hearts. At last year’s Oscars, actresses pinned blue ribbons to their dresses as a show of support towards the American Civil Liberties Union, and, this year, many wore pinned Planned Parenthood badges.
