Timepieces continue to prove themselves one of the most timeless luxuries one can invest in. Heirlooms both inherited and in-the-making, the purchase and upkeep of a luxury watch is something to be carefully considered.

For a piece youโ€™ll adore until the end of time, ignoring fleeting trends in favour of personal style, is always recommended. Look to the likes of Cindy Crawford (and now daughter Kaia Gerber) who has spent the better part of three decades wearing Omega Constellation models, a timeless style clearly favoured by the star, and youโ€™ll see what we mean.

โ€œUltimately, youโ€™re buying for yourself, so the main thing youโ€™re looking for is a timepiece that captures your heart,โ€ OMEGA CEO Mr Raynald Aeschlimann tells marie claire Australia. โ€œThatโ€™s the beauty of watchmaking. Itโ€™s largely based on emotion and personal taste.โ€

โ€œNicole Kidman often chooses our vintage timepieces from the 1920s, because thatโ€™s what suits her elegant style. Everyone is different. You can make a watch enduring simply be wearing it for a lifetime,โ€ he adds.

Picking a timepiece is just one part of the process, with careโ€”particularly if you wish to make an heirloom of them accessoryโ€”just as important. marie claire did its horology homework, and the experts were very specific about how to best care for your timepiece.

  • For cleaning, use a soft, lint-free cloth to regularly wipe down your watch, while a toothbrush with mild soapy water can be used to remove grime in the bracelet or band.
  • Watches can and should be regularly serviced by a professional, a frequency of every 5-8 years is suggested.
  • For swimmers, rinsing our watch under warm water after entering the ocean or chlorinated pools is advised. And keep in mind that while a watch maybe water-resistant, leather bands should avoid saltwater.
