If there’s one show that continues to nail the representation of the Royal Family, it’s The Crown. With the series currently filming its fifth season, we’ve been patiently awaiting the first look of Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana. The Australian actress is taking on the esteemed role for the final two seasons of the show, replacing Emma Corrin.
As we know, this season is shaping up to be the most dramatic yet, namely because it includes Princess Diana’s iconic ‘revenge dress’ moment. Arriving at the 1994 Vanity Fair dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London, Diana emerged in the stunning little number after her husband at the time, Prince Charles, had just admitted to having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles in a TV interview. It’s said that Diana had bought the dress in 1991, but considered it too daring to wear at the time — but that all changed when Charles came clean.
Debicki donned a perfect replica of the £900 Christina Stambolian silk crepe cocktail dress and the breathtaking sapphire, diamond and pearl necklace. As she stepped out of the car, there’s no denying that she is the spitting image of Princess Diana, down to the gestures and facial expressions.
“UPDATE: THE REVENGE DRESS HAS ENTERED THE CHAT,” one fan wrote on Twitter, expressing their excitement. “We’ve reached the Diana revenge dress era of the crown,” wrote another.
Elsewhere, photos surfaced of Debicki and Dominic West (who is playing Prince Charles), in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. It seems the pair were recreating the couples infamous 1991 trip to Italy with their sons Prince William and Prince Harry. Given that the fourth season ended with Diana and Charles struggling to keep their marriage intact, it’s believed that the fifth will cover their relationship breakdown in more extensive detail.
Little else is known about the series, but we did learn that Khalid Abdalla would play the role of Diana’s boyfriend, Dodi Fayed and Salim Daw will appear as his father, Mohamed Al-Fayed.
Season 5 of The Crown premieres in November 2022.
