If the countless headlines and high-fashion antics from the genetically blessed cast on the red carpet weren’t enough to convince you that Don’t Worry Darling was the most talked-about film of 2022, then you’ve clicked on the wrong article.
Several years after the first whispers of Olivia Wilde’s sophomore directorial project was reported, Don’t Worry Darling graced the screens of theatres around the world and in Australia on October 6, 2022.
But of course, you know that.
As Wilde herself remarked, “endless tabloid gossip” has kept the film’s name on the tip of everyone’s tongue, with social media and film critics alike having waited for the opportunity to sink their teeth into this wickedly sexy period-thriller to see what the fuss was truly about.
Sure, the headlines may have had you grappling with the behind-the-scenes drama and controversy that has followed the film, (and all the way to the 2022 Venice Film Festival might we add), but the on-screen drama also promised to live up to the hype—depending on what film review you read, may we add.
Harry Styles may have admitted his favourite thing about Don’t Worry Darling is that it “feels like a movie… a real go to the theatre film movie”, but you may have been waiting for it to hit streaming before tuning in.
Below, we round up everything there is to know about Don’t Worry Darling ahead of the film’s release online.
What Is ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ About?
As per the film’s official premise, Don’t Worry Darling follows a young couple, Jack and Alice, who are enlisted for a revolutionary albeit experimental and top secret project in the Palm Springs desert.
Set in a seemingly idyllic post-war town, Americana suburbia is laid bare through the prism of a restless housewife who begins to grapple with the fact that her reality is not what it seems.
Throughout the film, we learn the truth about the alleged utopia that is Victory and the mysterious ‘victory project’ that all the town’s husbands are enrolled in.
So far, critics have delivered very mixed reviews about the film’s set-up and delivery. Some have called the film’s themes “frequently rudimentary and repetitious”, while others have praised the cast’s performances.
As for us? We’ll be waiting for the film to release on BINGE to make up our own minds.
Who Is Starring In ‘Don’t Worry Darling’?
The star-studded ensemble cast can arguably be attributed to about 99% of the drama surrounding Don’t Worry Darling.
Helming the cast is Florence Pugh, who portrays a stay-at-home housewife, Alice.
As we know, Florence and Olivia are allegedly embroiled in a feud.
A rumoured tiff that accumulated in Florence skipping out on the press commitments associated with participating in the 2022 Venice Film Festival.
While the official report is that Florence was double booked while filming Dune 2, it’s most likely a plethora of factors contributed to Florence’s decision to miss the media events and enjoy an Aperol Spritz instead.
Co-starring with Florence is bona fide pop sensation Harry Styles.
Styles stars across Florence as her very sexy husband, Jack, who is employed in the very mysterious ‘Victory Project’ and has a penchant for performing oral sex on his wife—as we saw in that contentious trailer.
The circumstances under which Styles was brought into the project are disputed, to say the least—Styles replaced Shia LeBeouf in the role, with Olivia claiming she fired the actor because of his “combative energy”.
Shia retorted with a series of volatile videos of Olivia begging for him to come back to the project, with the former child star asserting that he was the one to walk away due to a lack of rehearsal time.
Olivia also claims that Styles was always one of her first choices for the role.
In a recent profile with Variety, Oliva explained that it was her and Florence who found “their Jack”, with the pair petitioning for Styles to land the role, however, the publication cites he was “touring and unavailable”.
Olivia Wilde also stars in the film, along with fronting the project as director.
Rounding out the cast is Chris Pine, who as we know was allegedly spat on by Styles along with being accused of ‘dissociating’ the entire press conference.
Gemma Chan also stars as an Orwellian-like ballet teacher and surprisingly left the project scot-free from the drama. Comedian Nick Kroll, Pistol star Sydney Chandler and emerging actress Kiki Layne also star in the film.
When Will ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Be Released?
Don’t Worry Darling was released in Australian cinemas on October 6, 2022. A perfect birthday present for those Libras out there.
However, if heading to the cinema isn’t for you and you decided to skip out, although Harry Styles does insist that Don’t Worry Darling is a real “go to the theatre movie film”, then you can rest assured that the film is also getting the streaming treatment.
Don’t Worry Darling will be available to stream on BINGE from July 4, so you’re going to want to sign up here now to start watching with a 14-day free trial.
